DARTMOUTH SOUTH-PORTLAND VALLEY (20)
formerly Dartmouth South

Candidates:

Liberal: Colin MacEachern
NDP: Marilyn More
PC: Tim Olive

Current MLA: Tim Olive (PC), Minister of Natural Resources

Riding Profile: Redistributed in 2003, this newly named riding includes 91 per cent of Dartmouth South (losing the area north of Lake Banook and Hawthorne Street to Dartmouth North) and gaining a corner of Cole Harbour-Eastern Passage.

It's a mixed riding that includes the Alderney Landing theatre, library and ferry downtown, as well as residential areas such as Woodside, Southdale and Portland Estates.

Several new condominium and multi-unit housing developments in the last few years have revitalized this area. It's also benefited from fabrication work tied to offshore rigs and construction.

The population is 21,220 and the average income is $28,720.

Issues: Education and pocketbook issues such as insurance and higher user fees are also issues in this riding.

Political History: This riding, which was represented by former premier John Savage, has mainly switched back and forth between Liberal and PC candidates since 1970, and the results are often close. The NDP won it in 1998, and this year’s NDP candidate is also the party president.

1999: PC Tim Olive defeats NDP Don Chard by 645 votes. LIB Audrey Goodyear was third.
1998: NDP Don Chard defeats LIB Bruce Hetherington by 512 votes.
1993: LIB John Savage defeats PC Colin May by 1,255 votes.

Voter Turnout: 63 per cent in 1999.
