Riding Profile: Primarily a middle-class, residential section of Dartmouth, it gained areas west of Settle Lake and east of Lucien Drive in the 2003 boundary redistribution. The riding includes homes along Lake Micmac, as well as a major shopping district on Main Street and the Akerley campus of the Nova Scotia Community College.

The riding is home to the Shubie Park campground and Fairbanks Interpretation Centre, as well as the neighbourhoods of Westphal and Port Wallace along the Waverley Road.

The population is 21,330 and the average income is $30,070.

Issues: Sunday shopping, schools and car insurance are issues.

Political History: Liberal Jim Smith, the former health minister, represented this riding from 1984 until his retirement in 2003. Two of three candidates running this time, Debra Barlow and Joan Massey, are former school board members.


1999:	LIB Jim Smith defeats PC Terry Degen by 265 votes. This was a three-way race with NDP Heather Henderson 700 votes behind Smith.
1998:	LIB Jim Smith defeats ND Viola Huntington by 372 votes.
1993:	LIB Jim Smith defeats PC Gwen Haliburton by 2,483 votes.

Voter Turnout: 69 per cent in 1999.
