From its base in Nova Scotia, the Canadian faith-based charity Chalice delivers international aid to Latin America, Haiti, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. It raises its funds through grassroots contacts with Roman Catholic parishes. As a result, Chalice has been recognized for its efficiency in getting money to people in need. In 2010, $15.8 million, 92.5% of its budget, was spent directly on programs. As part of that fundraising effort, Chalice takes donors to see what their money accomplishes, on a yearly mission trip.
The CBC's Jerry West travels to Peru and Bolivia, to report on the work of Chalice, and various other stories along the way. Funding for the trip is from individual CBC Radio One and Radio Canada International programs, and from the CBC Maritime Innovation Fund.
