Lazarus Sittichinli

Inuvik boy has famous great-grandfather.

Lazarus Sittichinli is known across the western arctic. A special constable, he helped police capture the infamous Mad Trapper of Rat River in the 1930s, leading a chase by dog team. He was also revered for his skills in hunting and trapping, as well as his knowledge of the land.

Former NWT premier Stephen Kakfwi has written a song about the man, praising his clear mind, and strength, and his status as a hero of the Gwich'in people.

Donovan McLeod is 11 and lives in Inuvik. He recently completed a history project, which he brought to Yellowknife for the NWT Heritage Fair.

In this soundslide, he discusses his famous great-grandfather and shows off a few family pictures.
