District profile: Historically working class in nature, St. John's South includes increasingly prosperous residential pockets. The district covers the traditional "west end" of St. John's (now geographically closer to the centre, due to city expansion), the western section of the downtown core and the south side of the harbour to Cape Spear, including neighbourhood of Shea Heights. In the 2007 redistribution, four per cent of Kilbride was added.

Population: 11,832.

Political history:

2003: Incumbent Tom Osborne re-elected with nearly 76 per cent of the total vote.

1999: Osborne defeated Liberal Patrick Kennedy by 2,478 votes.

1996: The PCs regained a historically Tory seat when Osborne defeated Liberal incumbent Tom Murphy by 104 votes.

1993: Murphy held on to the seat, defeating PC Jerome Quinlan by 392 votes.

1989: Murphy defeated PC Doug Atkinson by only two votes.

1975-1989: PC John Collins, finance minister under Premier Brian Peckford, was elected in St. John's South on four occasions.
