ST. JOHN’S CENTRE

Candidates:
LiberalLori Ann Campbell-Martino
NDPJane Robinson
PCShawn Skinner

Current MHA: Shawn Skinner (PC).

District Profile: With mostly working and middle-class residents, the district is bounded largely by Columbus Drive to the west, LeMarchant Road to the south, Parade Street to the east and Empire Avenue to the north. The district gained five per cent of St. John's West in the 2007 redistribution, but otherwise did not change.

Population: 11,962.

Political history: Since 1972, voters in the district have elected a member on the government side. A PC bastion for many years after Confederation, and an anti-Confederation area before that, St. John’s Centre shifted Liberal during the Wells and Tobin eras. St. John's Centre returned to Tory fold in 2003.

2003: PC Shawn Skinner, a former St. John's councillor, unseated Liberal cabinet minister Joan Marie Aylward, taking slightly over 55 per cent of the total vote.

1999: Aylward squeaked past PC Paul Brown by 166 votes.

1996: After redistribution, Aylward defeated Brown by 325 votes. Much of the former district of St. John's Centre was renamed St. John's East.
