Current MHA: Tony Cornect (PC) District profile: The district covers the peninsula of the same name and is among the poorest in the province. Many of the communities are dependent on welfare. The district also has a substantial francophone population. It contains the western part of the town of Stephenville as well as the communities of: Abraham's Cove, Aquathuna, Berry Head, Black Duck Brook, Boswarlos, Campbell's Creek, Cape St. George, De Grau, Felix Cove, Fox Island River, Jerry's Nose, Kippens, Lourdes, Lower Cove, Mainland, Marches Point, Piccadilly, Point au Mal, Port au Port, Red Brook, Sheaves Cove, Ship Cove, Three Rock Cove, West Bay, West Bay Centre and Winterhouse. It underwent slight changes in the 2007 redistribution. Population: 11,076 Political history: Feb. 8, 2007: In a byelection, PC Tony Cornect defeated Liberal Mark Felix by 1,180 votes to keep the seat in the Tory column. 2003: After a 10-year hiatus, PC Jim Hodder made a return to the district, unseating Liberal incumbent Gerald Smith. Hodder retired in January 2007, citing health reasons. 1993-2003: Liberal Gerald Smith, who served in cabinet in the health and employment portfolios, was elected three times in Port au Port. 1985-1993: Hodder won the seat in the 1985 and 1989 elections, as a PC.
