GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR/BUCHANSNewfoundland and Labrador's chief electoral officer has cancelled the election in Grand Falls-Windsor district, following the death of Liberal candidate Gerry Tobin. An election in the district will be scheduled for a later date. Current MHA: Anna Thistle (Liberal), who is not seeking re-election. District profile: In the heart of central Newfoundland. Includes part of the town of Grand Falls-Windsor to the north and stretches westward. Badger, Buchans, Buchans Junction, Crooked Lake, Millertown and Red Indian Lake are in the district. Forestry and mining are major industries. Population: 9,924. Political history: Formerly Grand Falls-Buchans, this district was expanded and renamed in the 2006 redistribution. It expanded slightly in all directions, but took in no major municipalities. Grand Falls-Buchans: 2003: Liberal incumbent Anna Thistle beat PC Paula Flood with over 56 per cent of the vote. 1999: Thistle defeated PC Lorne Woolridge, 1996: Thistle defeated PC Mike Mackey by 1,120 votes. 1995: In a byelection, Mackey defeated Thistle by 859 votes. 1979-1995: Tory heavyweight Len Simms represented Grand Falls district for 16 years. First elected in 1979 (while defeating future Liberal premier Roger Grimes), Simms handily won re-election in 1982, 1985, 1989 and 1993. Simms fought the last election as PC leader, against Premier Clyde Wells, whose Liberals were re-elected to form the government. Simms retired in 1995. 1975: PC John Lundrigan defeated Liberal Munden Batstone. 1971-1975: Tory Aubrey Senior won the 1971 and 1972 elections.
