CARTWRIGHT-L’ANSE AU CLAIRCandidates:
Current MHA: Yvonne Jones (Liberal). District profile: Covers remote communities in Southern Labrador that are mostly dependent on fishery. The district includes: Black Tickle, Charlottetown, Capstan Island, Cartwright, Domino, Forteau, L'Anse Amour, L'Anse au Clair, L'Anse au Loup, Lodge Bay, Mary's Harbour, Norman Bay, Paradise River, Pinsent's Arm, Pinware, Port Hope Simpson, Red Bay, St. Lewis, West St. Modeste and William's Harbour. The district went essentially unchanged in the 2007 redistribution. Population: 4,713. Political history: District is considered one of the safest Liberal seats in the province; on only one occasion in 32 years have voters not elected a Liberal, and even then – in 1996 – it was with a Liberal running as an Independent; Yvonne Jones has been a mainstay of the Liberal caucus since. 2003: Liberal incumbent Jones beat PC Dennis Normore by over 700 votes. 1999: Jones defeated PC Sharon Moores with over 84 per cent of the votes. 1996: Running as an Independent, Jones defeated the incumbent from Eagle River, Liberal Danny Dumaresque, who had defeated Jones for the Liberal nomination earlier that year. Jones later joined the Liberal caucus. 1989-1996: Dumaresque represented former Eagle River district during the Clyde Wells era. Dumaresque defeated Liberal incumbent Eugene Hiscock for the nomination in 1989, and easily won the 1989 and 1993 elections. 1979-1989: Hiscock easily won the 1979, 1982 and 1985 elections, even though the PCs held majority governments. 1975: Liberal Ian Strachan won the election that year, when Eagle River district was created.
