BURGEO-LA POILE

Candidates:
PCColin M. Short
LiberalKelvin Parsons
NDPJune Hiscock

Current MHA: Kelvin Parsons (Liberal).

District profile: Takes in the southwestern corner of Newfoundland, stretching from the town of Burgeo in the east to Cape Ray in the west. Its largest community, Port aux Basques, is the island's link to continental North America through the Marine Atlantic ferry service. The district, especially the town of Burgeo, has been hit hard by the closure of groundfisheries.

The population in the region dropped by about 15 per cent between 1996 and 2001. The size of the district grew significantly in the 2007 redistribution as the eastern border pushed out an extra 37 kilometres. The other boundaries changed only slightly.

Communities include: Burgeo, Burnt Islands, Cape Ray, Channel-Port aux Basques, Diamond Cove, Fox Roost, Grand Bruit, Harbour Le Cou, Isle aux Morts, La Poile, Long Grade, Margaree, Petites and Rose Blanche.

Population: 10,600.

Political history: Created as a new district in the 1995 redistribution, taking in all of the old La Poile district and parts of St. George's, Windsor-Buchans, Humber Valley and Burgeo-Bay D'Espoir - Burgeo. La Poile had been predominantly Liberal.

2003: Liberal Kelvin Parsons won easily in 2003, taking slightly over 80 per cent of the total vote to defeat PC Stephen P. Mackenzie.

1999: Port aux Basques lawyer Parsons kept the seat Liberal in 1999, beating Tory Greg Sheave and New Democrat Owen Marsden.

1996: Bill Ramsay, Liberal member from La Poile, won the new district.

1989-1996: Ramsay represented La Poile through two terms, with solid wins in the 1989 and 1993 elections.

1985: PC Calvin Mitchell scored an upset, taking a traditionally Liberal district with a 341-vote win over Noreen Saunders.

1975-1985: Steve Neary, elected in 1975 as an Independent Liberal before rejoining the Liberal party, held La Poile for a decade. (He had represented Bell Island between 1962 and 1972.) Neary served as acting Liberal leader following the 1982 election.
