Brazen robberies shake bar and motel

St. John's-area consumers are being warned to keep an eye out for stolen money that's not only hot, but burnt.
Brazen thieves executed complicated schemes to steal cash from a bar and a motel near St. John's, and might have used a blowtorch to open a stolen safe that held $7,500 in cash.
"Some burnt money has been showing up around town," said Barry Way, the owner of Barkley's Bar & Grill in Mount Pearl, who has come across a $20 and two $5 bills that were singed.
"Any burnt money showing up? Call the cops," said Way, who admitted he has little hope of recovering the $7,500 that had been locked inside a safe weighing more than 200 kilograms.
