Sept. 30, 2:40 p.m. – NFLD Election Letter
What sticks in my mind about Premier Grimes was his testimony
in the Senate in 1996??following the first education referendum??that
government's proposed education reform would not be the thin edge
of the wedge, and that anyone aggrieved by the implementation
of the reform could seek redress in the courts.
Well, lo and behold, there were people in Newfoundland who were
concerned about what was happening, and they took their case to
court and won. In the aftermath of that, Tobin, Grimes and company
contrived a crisis, brought on a second referendum . . . and the
rest is history. So I guess what then?Minister Grimes was saying
was that people could enjoy their rights under the revised Terms
of Union, provided they didn't try to enforce them.
Some would call that creative politics; others, dishonesty. Whatever
you chose to call it, it's the measure of the man.
