District Profile: The district runs from Windsor section of Grand Falls-Windsor in central Newfoundland to the town of Springdale, heart of former the Green Bay District. It also includes the communities of Beaumont, Brighton, Lushes Bight, Miles Cove, Pilley's Island, Port Anson, Roberts Arm, Sheppardville, South Brook, Springdale and Triton.

 

 


Candidate profiles:


PC Ray Hunter graduated from F.G. Bursey Memorial Collegiate in 1972. A journeyman electrician, he has owned Hunter's Electrical Ltd. since 1975. Elected to the House of Assembly on February 9, 1999, Hunter is the forest resources and agrifoods critic. He has also served as the vice-chair of the caucus strategy committee.

Liberal Barry Oake has been a town councillor in Grand Falls-Windsor since 1997. He works with the Central West Health Corporation. From 1995 to 2003, he was director of development with the Central and South Health Care Foundation. He worked for 15 years in private broadcasting in the province. Oake has been active with a variety of community groups including Big Brothers-Big Sisters and minor hockey.

Elmer Anthony is a member of the Newfoundland independence movement, but because the group has no official status, he appears on the ballot as an non-affiliated. A retired computer engineer, Anthony returned to the province in June to live in Robert's Arm.

 
 


Political History: The district was formed from the former districts of Green Bay and Windsor-Buchans. Green Bay was the district in which PC Brian Peckford was MHA from 1972 until his resignation in 1989. He became premier in 1979.

1999: PC Ray Hunter took another run at the district in 1999, beating Liberal Graham Flight in a five-way race by more than 1,000 votes.
1996:

In the new district of Windsor-Springdale, Flight captured the new seat in 1996, defeating PC Alvin Hewlett, the incumbent from Green Bay, by 16 votes.

1993: Flight won in 1993, again defeating Hunter by 733 votes
1989: In 1989, Wells ran unsuccessfully in Humber East and Flight came back and defeated PC Ray Hunter by 172 votes
1987: In the 1987 by-election, Clyde Wells defeated PC Sean Power by 428 votes.
1975 - 1987: In Windsor-Buchans, Liberal Graham Flight won in 1975 and 1979. He was defeated in 1982 and was re-elected in 1985. Flight resigned in 1987.
