Candidate profiles:

Liberal Joan Marie Aylward graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing and completed her nursing degree at Memorial University in St. John's. She was elected president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses' Union in 1990 and held that position for five years. After her election in 1996 in St. John's Centre, Aylward was appointed minister of social services. In May 1997, she was appointed minister of health and in January 2000, minister of municipal and provincial affairs. On Feb.13, 2001 she was appointed minister of finance and president of Treasury Board.

PC Shawn Skinner handily defeated Joel McBreairty to win the nomination in August, after Paul Brown resigned as the district’s candidate. Brown had defeated Skinner for the nomination in November 2002. Skinner, principal and owner of Keyin Technical College in St. John’s, is a former St. John’s city councillor. He also is president of the Benevolent Irish Society and a member of the St. John’s Royal Regatta committee.

New Democrat Carol Cantwell, a retired teacher, is a trustee of the Avalon East School Board. She ran for the NDP in a six-way race in St. John’s East the 2000 federal election. Cantwell placed third with 5,395 votes. She’s also a member of the party’s provincial executive board.
