District Profile: Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair covers remote communities in Southern Labrador that are mostly dependent on fishery. The district includes: Black Tickle, Charlottetown, Capstan Island, Cartwright, Domino, Forteau, L'Anse Amour, L'Anse au Clair, L'Anse au Loup, Lodge Bay, Mary's Harbour, Norman Bay, Paradise River, Pinsent's Arm, Pinware, Port Hope Simpson, Red Bay, St. Lewis, West St. Modeste, and William's Harbour.

 

 


Candidate profiles:


Liberal candidate Yvonne Jones is the minister of fisheries and aquaculture and the minister responsible for the status of women. She was first introduced to politics in 1991, when elected as mayor of her hometown, Mary's Harbour. For 10 years, prior to being elected as a MHA, Ms. Jones owned and operated small businesses in Labrador in both the transportation and tourism sectors.

PC candidate Dennis Normore is a lifelong resident of southern Labrador. He is the principal of Mountain Field Academy in Forteau. He served as the mayor of L’Anse au Loup from 1994-1997. Normore is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.Sc and a B.Ed.

The Labrador Party's Frank Pye is a retired United Church minister and farmer. The owner of Grand River Farms, he had dispute with the province two years ago over access to Crown land to expand his operation. He's secretary to the Lake Melville Agricultural Association and an activist with the Friends of the Grand River, an environmental organization. Pye, who is president of the Labrador Party's Lake Melville district association, is a founding organizer of the party.

 

 
 


Political History: The district, which was created from the former Eagle River District, has a history of being a Liberal seat.

1999: Jones ran in the 1999 election as a Liberal candidate. She defeated PC Sharon Moores, bringing in over 84 per cent of the votes.
1996: Independent Yvonne Jones defeated the incumbent from Eagle River, Liberal Danny Dumaresque. Dumaresque had defeated Jones for the Liberal nomination earlier that year.
