Many of the early paintings and drawings of Newfoundland and Labrador in the collections of The Rooms were created in the late 1800's by visitors from Europe and America. However, in the mid-twentieth century more livyers began to focus on interpreting this place, and their own experiences, through art.

That surge in art creation fifty years ago laid the foundation for the current activity in the visual arts scene.

Our culture of stories and songs goes back many centuries. But visual art in the European artistic tradition is much younger in this province, and exploration of the material culture of aboriginal peoples is ongoing.

From aboriginal carvings and hooked mats to video art installation and oil paintings, the appreciation and creation of our visual culture is set to accelerate because of The Rooms.

All citizens will benefit from that evolution. In the future, the vault of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery and the digitization of its Permanent Collections will give Newfoundlanders and Labradorians access to over 7,000 artworks.

This site cracks open the vault's door to give everyone a peek at the riches inside. These 24 images tell stories about our identity and represent a broad range of artistic media. As well, this site will introduce you to some of the visual artists who have used their creativity and skill to reflect and explore our culture.
