Winter Storm Watch

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FOR....

St. John's and Vicinity
Avalon Peninsula North
Avalon Peninsula South

The Latest

Well unfortunately the water is just as murky as it was 24 hours on our system moving in Thursday night and into Friday. Here's what we do know for sure.

-Snow will move into the Avalon Thursday evening, with as much as 10-15 cm of Snow falling by the time we get to Friday morning.
-Winds will be gusting to 60 or 70 km/h overnight which will really help some of those Snow drifts grow.
-The Friday morning commute will be a MESS anywhere in the Metro area.
-By Friday morning the Snow will be backing it's way into Central falling across Bonavista, Gander, Clarenville, The Burin Peninsula and even as far West as Grand Falls-Windsor.

Questions Remain

-The forecast models still can't agree on just how much Warm air will wrap into this thing on Friday. It's going to be a tough call.
-The European model is still all on it's own... keeping that warm air out of the Storm completely and bringing in not only an all Snow event... but a decent sized Storm as well. That said, it's the only model holding onto that idea.
-Both the Canadian and American forecast models are wrapping warm air in and that would mean a change over to Freezing Rain, Ice Pellets and perhaps even Rain for some in Eastern Newfoundland and into Eastern Labrador on Friday.
-The Canadian model is still the strongest with that idea... and shows a change over to Rain as far West as the Humber Valley and the Northern Peninsula by Friday night. It's also showing a change over to Rain as far West as HVGB on Saturday.
-The American is again weaker on the idea... but a change over along the Northeast Coast and up through the Straits and the South Coast of Labrador seems likely on this models as well.

I'm going have a look at the afternoon model runs... and come up with a rough time line for you tonight on Here & Now.

My husband and I enjoy your reporting very much. Your excitement about the weather systems is so obvious and makes the forecast enjoyable and interesting to watch. Also, your knowledge about weather and the effort you put in to studying its systems comes shining through in every broadcast. Great work
