Storm Update-11:30 am

What a morning it's been so far...

Feb510-2.JPG

-Already 10 cm down in St. John's and the Metro area.
-Wind gusts of 85 km/h in CBS
-Wind gusts of 95 km/h in Cape Race
-Wind gusts of 87 km/h in Bonavista

We've been seeing some pretty decent Snow bands so far this morning... but things are only going get worse this afternoon. As I type this, I'm watching one of the heaviest bands yet just approaching the Avalon from the East. This will be dropping 1-2 cm per hour as it makes it's way across the Avalon in the next few hours.

No changes to the Snowfall map I posted yesterday. I'm working on my map for Coastal Labrador right now, I'll post that later this afternoon and tonight on Here and Now.

WIND!!
I can't stress enough that the Winds are going to continue to pick up as we go through out the day. 90-110 km/h right in from the North. Blowing Snow, Drifting Snow and White out conditions will be a huge factor as the heavier Snow bands move in later this afternoon and into this evening.

Only 10cm?? It looks like 30 where I am. My driveway must be a drift trap. Also I am wondering if the radar from EC is low on snowfall rates. I am sure we are picking up more than 0.5cm/hr right now.

We just heard you on CBC Radio commenting on the storm with Buddy Wassiname (Kevin Blackmore)& loved the repartee! I think since the guys are in St John's, you should get 'Buddy" to come on Here & Now with you to "interpret" the p.m. weather report into "Newfinese" for you.
It'd be a great treat, Kevin has a long history of working wioth CBC to ad his special humour to the programming... as far back as cross-country links with Arthur Black on "Basic Black" 25 years ago on Saturday mornings with Arthur broadcasting out of CBC Vancouver! On one episode Kevin played tunes on a Hoover vacuum cleaner & a garbage bag, playing it like some insane bagpipe.
Hope your courses in meterology keep paying off... Wells never did the weather as accurately or with the elan you manage. You've turned out to be an asset to NL and the H&N team! Good going.
