Snowfall Totals

Hey Folks,

Many of you have been emailing or writing into the blog wondering just how much Snow we actually had on Friday and into Saturday. What's interesting to note here is how much Snowfall totals really dropped off as you moved away from the Northeast Coast.
I've heard from folks in Whitbourne who say they didn't get much at all. A comment from some folks in Harbour Grace say they expected more as well, which is surprising to me, given the totals in St. John's, Bonavista and Terra Nova. Along the South Coast, places like Argentia and the Burin didn't see much at all, again just too far from that Northeast Coastline.

Here are the totals from Environment Canada.

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OBSERVED AT
SELECTED SITES AS OF 4:30 AM SUNDAY...

BONAVISTA ................... 53.7 CM *
GANDER INT'L'AIRPORT ........ 45.0 CM
ST. JOHN'S INT'L'AIRPORT .... 38.0 CM
TERRA NOVA .................. 37.3 CM *
CORNERBROOK ................. 10.8 CM *
ARGENTIA .................... 10.6 CM *
ST. LAWRENCE ................ 5.6 CM *

* SNOWFALL ESTIMATED USING WATER EQUIVALENT WITH 1 MILLIMETRE LIQUID
TO 1 CENTIMETRE RATIO.

Again, if those Snowfall totals seem lower than what you saw in your backyard, remember it's soooo hard to get an accurate measurement when the winds were blowing as hard as they were. Actual totals could have been higher still.

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF SIGNIFICANT PEAK WIND GUSTS

CAPE RACE ................... 128 KM/HR
BONAVISTA ................... 106 KM/HR
SAGONA ISLAND ............... 102 KM/HR
TWILLINGATE ................. 96 KM/HR
BURGEO....................... 93 KM/HR
ARGENTIA .................... 80 KM/HR
ST. JOHN'S INT'L'AIRPORT .... 76 KM/HR
GANDER ...................... 76 KM/HR
ST. LAWRENCE ................ 72 KM/HR
WRECKHOUSE .................. 69 KM/HR

LABRADOR SNOW

You folks along the Coast of Labrador have had a wet 24 hours or so. Cartwright has been reporting Rain since early on Sunday, same thing in Mary's Harbour. Light Drizzle has even been reported up towards the Makkovik area. Now that Warmer Coastal flow will FINALLY turn a bit cooler tonight and in through tomorrow and you will see that change over to Wet Snow and Blowing Snow in the Northern Sections along the Coast. In the Hopedale to Groswater Bay section of the Coast you could see as much as 15 to 25 centimetres in the next 36 hours or so. South of Groswater Bay down through Cartwright and to the Straits, the Mixing with continue... however in the higher elevations 10-15 cm of Wet Snow could fall.
Again, thanks to those temperatures being just 1, 2 or 3 degrees warmer, Snowfall totals won't end up as high as they were looking late last week.

More details on Here & Now tonight.

Ryan

P.S. WE COULD BE LOOKING AT ANOTHER BIGGIE FOR THE PROVINCE THIS THURSDAY-FRIDAY-SATURDAY. MORE ON THAT TOMORROW.
