GOLFING IN JANUARY!!!

Hey Folks,

First of all Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday season. Alright on to the Weather.

It's funny in my travels over the past 2 weeks running into people here and there, it seems to be a 50/50 split on folks who are loving this mild No Snow weather... and folks who are dying for Snow! The Snowmobilers are crying themselves to sleep at night... where as the golfers are loving it! Golfers you ask??

Yes, I heard from someone at my pickup hockey game last night that 20 rounds of Golf were played at Pitcher's Pond Golf Course near Trinity Bay on Saturday!!! Unbelievable. And that's not the only place where Golf was played. Travis Stuber from The View Golf Resort, Princeton, Bonavista Bay sent me some pictures this afternoon. He said... "It was a balmy +4 degrees C on Saturday and the course was dry enough to enable these dedicated golfers to enjoy the day."

The ice remaining on Hole 4 meant Dave White didn't lose a ball to the water hazard.

Floyd Prince plays his ball from the little snow left on Hole 9... January 2nd.

Thanks Travis for the pictures.

DECEMBER WARMTH
Alright let's look at the December numbers. Before I start, I should mention that the Mean temperature is based on Day time Highs AND Night Time Lows.

St. John's Dec 09 Mean: -0.8, 76 cm Snow, 93 mm Rain
The Normal Dec Mean: -2.2, 61 cm Snow, 88 mm Rain

Gander Dec 09 Mean: -2.1, 53 cm Snow, 80 mm Rain
The Normal Dec Mean: -4.3, 82 cm of Snow, 36 mm Rain

Deer Lake Dec 09 Mean: -2.3, 85 cm Snow, 25 mm Rain
The Normal Dec Mean: -5.4, 96 cm Snow, 29 mm Rain

Cartwright Dec 09 Mean: -3.9, 70 cm Snow, 65 mm Rain
The Normal Dec Mean: -10.0, 81 cm Snow, 15 mm Rain

HVGB Dec 09 Mean: -7.3, 48 cm Snow, 6 mm Rain
Normal Dec Mean: -13.9, 78 cm Snow, 6 mm Rain

Lab City Dec 09 Mean: -13.2, 84 cm Snow, 4 mm Rain
The Normal Dec Mean: -18.5, 70 cm Snow, 3 mm Rain

So as you can see, the ENTIRE Province was above normal for the month of December. The extremes being in Eastern Labrador where you folks were between 6 and 7 degrees above normal. Cartwright and down through the Straits, 65 mm of Rain in December is crazy.
In Newfoundland the West Coast was more than 3 degrees above normal while St. John's was just a degree and half above normal. Although that doesn't sound like much, I think the biggest factor in Newfoundland is that the later half of the month didn't cool down like it was supposed to... that helped wipe out what little Snow was left.

STORM ON SATURDAY???
This week across the Province will continue to be the same old same old. Temperatures flirting with the freezing mark in Newfoundland with Showers and Flurries kicking around. In Labrador things will continue to be warmer than normal but cold enough for Snow. In fact Western Labrador could pick up 5-10 cm between Tuesday and Thursday.

But how about you Snow lovers in Newfoundland??? I know you're looking for something... anything!!!!
Well for folks in Eastern Newfoundland we may have something brewing for this weekend in fact. The Canadian and American models have been toying with idea of a Coastal Storm hitting Newfoundland on Saturday or Saturday night. It's been off and on depending on the day with both models. However both models are showing then storm in the latest afternoon run. The American model below hits us hardest...

The European model has been showing the storm as well. However in the latest run it brings a weaker system in on Saturday night. I'll keep you updated.
