August Rainfall Totals and Invest 94

Hey Folks,

Happy September! Wow it's hard to believe we're only 21 days away from the official start of Fall. I have to admit, Fall is my favorite season. There's nothing better than a Sunny crisp Fall day. That said, it's going to be tough to say goodbye to summer. The good news is, summer isn't going anywhere just yet, we have some warmer type temperatures sticking around through this week and perhaps into next week.

So with August behind us, I know a question on my mind and perhaps it's a question you're asking as well, how much rain did we get??

Here's a look at the numbers from August

St. John's
August Average Rainfall: 108 mm
Actual Rainfall: 168 mm

Eastern Newfoundland finally had some rain in the month of August. After dry months in April, June and July and the on going water ban, it was a MUCH needed shot which should have really helped the water table.

Gander
August Average Rainfall: 96 mm
Actual Rainfall: 204 mm

Central Newfoundland had a wetter than normal July and August was a very wet month as well... with almost double the rainfall. A good chunk of that rain was thanks to Tropical Storm Bill (70 mm) and then Danny (54 mm) this past weekend.

Deer Lake
August Average Rainfall: 100 mm
Actual Rainfall: 145 mm

Stephenville
August Average Rainfall: 122 mm
Actual Rainfall: 210 mm

Well, as you can see Stephenville typically see's a little more rainfall than Deer Lake anyway, however 65 mm more is something. Most of that 65 mm fell in some heavy thunderstorms around the 16th and then from Danny which dropped 54 mm in Stephenville and only 32 in Deer Lake. Either way, most of the West Coast has a wetter than normal August.

Cartwright
August Average Rainfall: 92 mm
Actual Rainfall: 100 mm

South Eastern Labrador had a typical August in terms of rainfall. However it really quite spread out through the month with little shots of rain regularly. In fact, according to the Weather Station in Cartwright, you folks only had 6 days in the entire month of August which were RAIN FREE.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay
August Average Rainfall: 99 mm
Actual Rainfall: 115 mm

Again, you folks in the Lake Melville region had a pretty typical August in terms of rainfall amounts. However much like the Southern Coast, it was really spread out and it rained a trace of rain or more 22 days out of 31.

Labrador City
August Average Rainfall: 95 mm
Actual Rainfall: 139 mm + 6 cm of Snow

Well, it was quite an August for you folks in Western Labrador. Only 5 days in the whole month were rain free. And as far back as the records go... which is 1960... you've never seen more than a 1 cm of Snow in August and you had 6!!!! The first time in 21 years that it's snowed in August.

INVEST 94

Just wanted to let you know I'm watching this cluster of Storms spinning in the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Centre has this system listed as HIGH potential for development. And perhaps even as early as tonight or tomorrow morning we could be looking at Tropical Storm Erica. The biggest question of course is, where will she go? As you can see by the spaghetti model below, it's a very large spread right now.

As always, I'll keep you posted.
