Old Man Winter's Latest Blow
4PM UPDATE I just wanted to quickly mention that I'm watching a system which has been parked along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard for the past few days. It's dumping huge amounts of rain, with some places picking up as much as 5 inches! This system will work North over the weekend and into Newfoundland on Monday. How strong it will be when it gets here remains to be seen. The forecast models have been getting stronger and stronger with it, especially the Canadian GEM model. In fact, the latest afternoon model run is showing a power house fall type storms with extreme winds and heavy rains hitting Eastern Newfoundland late Monday. HOWEVER, I should mention, the American and European models are significantly weaker with the system and have been a little more consistant. So we'll have to wait and see, however I'm watching it closely and I'll have another update tomorrow here on the blog. Ryan Hey Folks, Over the past couple of days, I've been talking about this airmass which came in into Eastern Labrador on Tuesday and into Newfoundland through out the day on Wednesday. This was a Chilly Chilly pocket of air... dropping temperatures as winds shifted in from the North. Last night, some of the coldest temperatures so far this season were felt across Newfoundland. If you've been reading the blog over the past few days, I had been hinting that this airmass was certainly cold enough in the upper levels to produce Snow... however I wasn't sure we would get cold enough here at surface to produce any type of wintery precip. Well last night in Gander, with below freezing air just a few hundred metres above... and temperatures of just 3 degrees at the airport... ICE PELLETS were confirmed at the Weather station. Conditions: CYQX (GANDER INTL AIRP, NL, CA) observed 0409 UTC 10 September 2009 And it appears Gander wasn't the only place to see ice pellets. Lori West snapped this picture last evening in Ladle Cove, on the Northeast coast of the Island between Carmanville and Musgrave Harbour. BROKEN LOW RECORDS GANDER- LAST NIGHT LOW: 3.3 degrees. Old Record: 3.9 in 1937!!! So temperatures records broken and Winter Precip below the 50 North Latitude line in early September. I guess Old Man Winter means business. The good news is, we are warming up today... with temperatures pushing 20 degrees on both Friday and Saturday in Newfoundland.... Before we cool down again. Enjoy it while it's still here! See you tonight at 6. Ryan Your Comments
