WEDNESDAY WINTER WALLOP!

Hey folks,

I hope you folks in St. John's and along the Avalon enjoyed digging out this morning. I called Environment Canada this morning, they said the official measurement at the airport was 12 cm's of snow fell. But man oh man it felt like a lot more than that when I was shoveling the driveway this morning. It's so tough to tell because it was blowing and drifting so bad... but I would say at least 15 cm at my place... if not 20 cm. Of course, lesser amounts as you head West... with 5-10 in the Bonavista area and just 2 cm in Gander.

TUESDAY
Looks very nice ALMOST everywhere. You folks along the West Coast might once again see some sea effect flurries coming off the Gulf with winds in from the West. Sunshine everywhere else.

COLD BLAST COMING
Arctic air is knocking at the door at it's ready to move on in. In fact everywhere from Winnipeg to Toronto to Montreal to Fredricton to Halifax and even into the Northeast U.S. is forecast to see a MASSIVE Cold blast for the later part of this week. However, you folks in Labrador don't have to wait that long. Beginning tomorrow Labrador City will start to see temperature high's 10 degrees BELOW normal... -27 will be a common high this week! Even Happy Valley-Goose Bay will see 5 to 10 degrees below normal this week... with Friday likley being the Coldest.
You folks in Newfoundland will be protected a bit... but Thursday & Friday here will be pretty Chilly as well... so be ready for it.

WEDNESDAY'S STORM
Indeed Wednesday looks interesting. We have an Alberta Clipper coming out of the West and another system coming out of the Gulf of Mexico and then up the Eastern Seaboard. Those two system's will merge over the Maritimes sometime Tuesday night and blow up into a BIG TIME STORM for Newfoundland & Labrador.
SNOW, FREEZING RAIN, ICE PELLETS, RAIN & Lots of Lots of Wind are on the Menu... with the big question of course being... who's eating what?

WedWallop.JPG

An early look appears to have the Centre of the Low tracking onto the Island somewhere between Burgeo and Placentia Bay... with a more Eastern track looking favorable. It's looking like, AS OF NOW, The Burin Peninsula, Terra Nova Park and area West could see all Snow and lots of it. The Avalon and Bonavista Peninsula's look like Snow, a significant period of Mixing or Ice... followed by Rain. However again, we're 2 days away... so this will likely change.

JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT WEDNESDAY WILL BE MESSY. More details tonight on Here & Now.

I love your weather... It is nice to see some genuine enthusiasm about meteorological events. ... a bit of advice, having retired from a weather dependent occupation, stay away from sweeping predictions of apocalyptic weather events. Newfoundland will make you a liar every time. Then it will ambush you when you are not looking. It is best just to advise people to "batten down the hatches" and keep their eyes wide open. GOOD LUCK.
