What a Month... What a Weekend
Wow. That's all you can say about this past Saturday in St. John's.
97 mm fell in the City of St. John's on Saturday... 67 mm of which fell in just 3 hours in the late afternoon and evening.
If you recall my forecast on Friday night said 25 mm of rain for Saturday. So what happened? Good question. First of all, the system, which came in from the Atlantic, was a lot stronger than all of the computer models were indicatiing. Out of all the forecast models I looked at on Friday the most rainfall predicted was maybe 40 mm. But even that seemed like a a long shot as of Friday evening. The system for the most part, was supposed to track off shore... with the heaviest rain falling well East of the Island. However as the Low intensified those higher amounts moved onshore and inland. Aiding the growing Low of course, was the fact that it was over the ocean, which meant there was no shortage of moisture. All that adds up to 97 mm of rain in 24 hours.
Quite a finish to a very wet month overall across the Province. I looked up some numbers today and here's how November played out.
St. John's- Rainfall 234 mm, Snowfall 0.8 cm
Average- Rainfall 116 mm, Snowfall 26 cm
Gander- Rainfall 134.6 mm, Snowfall 3.2 cm

Labrador City- Rainfall 55 mm, Snowfall 98.4 cm

As you can see, everyone was well above average in terms of precipitation in the month of November. And it's looks like December is going to pick up right where November left off. More rain is moving in tonight and into Tuesday. With the pattern staying active over the next few weeks. More details tonight on Here & Now.

I wish to know the snow fall for January and February 2009 in CM or In. Thanks
