John Furlong: 1950-2014
These are some of many condolence messages sent via Facebook and Twitter.
He was my favourite ! I loved listening to him as he always made me laugh out loud. I even told him so, on my last kilometer of Cape to Cabot, as he was walking down from Cabot Tower, and I was running up to the finish ! I am very sad today , he will be missed terribly.

@johnfurlongcbc in response to the schools closing with 10 cm of snow "Oh the humanity!" such utterances will be missed!
- Jamie Parsons
I will greatly miss John. He was an amazing broadcaster and journalist. I got to know him as a guest on crosstalk over the past 6 months. He was respectful, witty, and always knew the right questions to ask.
- Gideon Barker
The unparalleled interviewer and broadcaster, John Furlong, will be missed. @CBCNL won't be same.
- CHBA Nfld & Labrador
@CBCNL I respected John greatly, and told him that last time I saw him. I didn't always agree with him & his unorthodox ways of getting people to get to the core of the issue, but I appreciated his honesty. I'm saddened by the loss. NL has lost a prominent journalist.
- Remzi Cej
My goodness, that's terrible. He was one of my favourite broadcasters. He had a wonderful, dry sense of humour, and he wasn't afraid to ask the tough questions. Toward the end of his tenure at the Fisheries Broadcast he could have rested on his laurels, but instead kept stirring the pot with a series of essays examining our sacred cows and pushing for change. Rest in peace, John.
- Justin Burnett
I always liked when he asked "sure what's wrong with that?" He asked the questions we all wanted to ask.
- Lana Collins
Rest in Peace John Furlong and sincere condolences to family and friends. Thank you for your unconventional approach and wit.

We will not see the likes of him again..He was the ever Townie, hosting a Baymen's Broadcast and he fitted right in..While I have NO connection to the Fishery, I became a die hard listener, because of him and his interviewing and hosting abilities..We will miss him..RIP John Furlong....

Such a shock this morning to hear about John's passing. He will be missed. For me, he was the epitomy of who/what a journalist should be. My deepest sympathy for his wife and children, friends and co-workers. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this difficult time.

I remember an interview with John last summer at Cape Spear as the humpbacks feed nearby. We were two happy guys.
- J Lawson
Such tragic, heartbreaking news. He will be missed terribly. I had the opportunity to sit and chat with him about Christmas movies in December, on the show, and it was a wonderful time. RIP, John.
- Heidi Wicks
John Furlong first hired me to do an outrageous commentary for the Morning Show and I was hooked. Big voice, big loss

John could talk to anyone, whether he was a fisherman from Ramea or a PhD from Harvard, and I never heard a politician on the Broadcast get away with doublespeak or obfuscation. His death is an irreplaceable loss.
- John Taylor-Hood
As an MA student writing on the NL fishery, John Furlong was the best intro to NL culture you could ask for. He will be missed.
A true gentleman! Loved listening to him and enjoyed doing the show when he came to my school in December to record our Christmas concert. Rest in peace!

John Furlong was a helluva journalist. Some hosts just read the script but he asked the tough questions and spoke his mind.
- Brodie Thomas
@CBCNL So sad to hear of the passing of corner boy John Furlong. My favourite quote said live: Don't wax the stairs, your father's drinking.
