Couch Surfing
There are many tourists coming to St. John’s in the summer months from all over the world. Most of them are staying in hotels or B&B’s but there are also travellers who use the so called Couch Surfing network and stay with locals as guests in their homes. At the moment there are over 100 people in town offering their houses for free to couch surfers. The house we are going to visit with Jiri Slavicinsky is located on the seashore in the picturesque Battery neighbourhood.
Jiri Slavicinsky was born in 1981 in Rymarov, Czech Republic. He studied sociology and musicology at Masaryk University in Brno and at the University of Helsinki, Finland.
During his studies, he wrote newspaper articles on music and took an interest in cultural and urban sociology. Since completing his university studies in 2006, he has worked in the cultural section of Czech Radio in Ostrava. His work included interviews and other programmes, mainly with a focus on music. At the 2008 – 2009 EBU Master School on Radio Features he fell in love with the radio documentary genre.
To develop his documentary making skills, Jiri came to Canada this summer to work as an intern at Battery Radio run by independent producer Chris Brookes.
