New life for old books
The smell of books and the sound of an old cash register, those are the first things you notice when you enter the Afterwords second hand book store. The store has been run by Catherine McCausland and her husband David Benson since 1977. At the moment this is the only place in St. John's where you can buy used books.
Every day they welcome a diverse group of readers. Some people come regularly and spend several hours, while others walk in accidentally and stay for a few minutes or longer.
Visiting used book stores is considerate of your pocket and the environment. It can be adventurous and exciting as well – you never know what you will find on the shelves. Jiri Slavicinsky took his mike and camera to explore the atmosphere of one such place.
Jiri Slavicinsky was born in 1981 in Rymarov, Czech Republic. He studied sociology and musicology at Masaryk University in Brno and at the University of Helsinki, Finland. To develop his documentary making skills, Jiri came to Canada this summer to work as an intern at Battery Radio run by independent producer Chris Brookes.
