Hurricane Igor hits the video circuit
Hurricane Igor is now far offshore, but its legacy is left behind … including plenty of videos shots by people all over.
Here’s a video that was seen at least 80,000 times in its first day on YouTube. It was shot in Beau Bois, on the Burin Peninsula, as a wicked gale and heavy rains blew away a road, pushing a barn right out in the water. Warning: There’s strong language in this one; hit mute if you have children nearby.
The Waterford River was just one waterway to swell up on Tuesday. On Waterford Bridge Road, it was hard to see any asphalt at all:
Here’s another view of the Waterford, mid-morning:
Further west, this video shows how streets looked like ponds in Mount Pearl:
This video is a compilation of photographs taken on the Southern Shore:
The road by Gander International Airport looked like a canal:
Even little creeks looked quite threatening after Igor started dropping hefty rainfalls. Here’s a narrated video from the east end of St. John’s:

Orca-nized jumps: Video of breaching killer whales

It’s been quite the week for orca sightings around Newfoundland. First, we had the remarkable video of orcas living up to their nickname of killer whales, with an attack on a minke whale. Other video has surfaced, including shots from Torbay that we embedded into this story that reported a warning of getting too close to orcas.
Today, there’s this video, which Bob Bartlett of Trinity Bay posted to his YouTube channel. Click here for a second video, and here for Bob’s channel itself.

A quiet race in St. John's harbour
My family and I were downtown Saturday when we noticed something you don’t see that often in the harbour: a sailboat. And then another, and another after that…
There turned out to be eight sailboats in all, competing in the Port Authority Harbour Race. They lapped the harbour for more than an hour, while hundreds of people (us included) looked on.
Joe Dawson was also there, captured some scenes and posted them to YouTube.

A very fast drive along Topsail Road
This video was posted to YouTube this week, with a speeded-up recording of the drive from Upper Gullies through the rest of Conception Bay South, into Paradise and Mount Pearl and finally into the heart of St. John’s (to Churchill Square, if you hang in there).
Perhaps there’s an expat who might like to see how the old road has changed.

Soccer tricks
Andrew Brown, who’s been working in our newsroom and did yeoman service as a blogger with CBC Sports’ World Cup coverage, shot this video on Saturday during Soccer Day in Canada celebrations at King George V park near downtown St. John’s.
As Andrew put it in his own post: “19-year-old Vince Hearn, in my opinion, stole the show with some of the most impressive soccer ball tricks I’ve ever seen.”
