Twitter at 5
Twitter is turning five this year … which may surprise people who are just discovering it. To mark this momentous occasion, the folks at Funny Or Die lifted a page (or a style) from the reverent documentaries Ken Burns has made on the Civil War, baseball, jazz and so on.
It’s our smile of the day. (And you can follow us on Twitter right here; click on this link to find CBC staffers and programs from Newfoundland and Labrador.)

Twitter and the Igor effect
We’ve been learning about Twitter a lot at the CBC newsroom in St. John’s, and learning a lot from it, too. We’ve been steadily growing our base and our connections in the community, but things really moved to another plane during Hurricane Igor. We pulled in countless bits of information on the day Igor struck, tweeted and retweeted what we were learning, and made a profound connection with a lot of our audience. Our Twitter feed is here.
Igor was also the day that a lot of people got into Twitter - either for the first time, or more seriousy. The above chart shows our growth in followers over the last month. The day of the storm is obvious to detect.

The kindness of strangers
The Yuk Yuk’s comedy club is used to laughs, but this tweet brought a smile of another kind:

Welcome Cecil Haire to Twitter
On Thursday, I showed Cecil Haire how to use Twitter on his phone.
On Friday, Cecil dived right into it, tweeting regularly on traffic problems and what he was seeing around town as he filed live reports in to the St. John’s Morning Show. He even snapped a pic of a cruise ship just after it came through the Narrows.
You can follow Cecil on Twitter right here. He’ll be using it to fill in the blanks for his daily reports, keep you updated on traffic, and to gather information from you about what you’re seeing around the St. John’s area. (The man, after all, can only be in one place at once!)

One way to cover your local news bases

The fact that you’re here means (we hope!) that you like getting your news from CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.
But I’ll be upfront … there are other ways to get news, too.
To help keep track of what’s happening in the local media, I created a list of Twitter feeds from local media outlets and individuals. Feel free to follow the list yourself; you can find it right here.
Don’t forget: we’re on Twitter, too.
