Recycling: Keep it blue, but especially keep it plastic
It may sound counter-intuitive, but bio-degradable bags are being discouraged from the new curbside recycling program in St. John’s.
Why? Well, those bags don’t end their lives when their contents are taken and sorted at the new facility at Robin Hood Bay. They actually get tumbled together and are recycled themselves, and the biodegradable bags wind up contaminating - yes, that’s the word that’s used - the lot. Who knew?
Moreover, it turns out that the blue bags are the ones the city wants to see and handle.
