Lanier Phillips in The Washington Post

The Lanier Phillips story is a wonderful, life-affirming one, and it’s been well told over the years. Phillips, who is black and grew up in the American South, was a survivor of the Pollux-Truxtun shipwreck off St. Lawrence in the Second World War; he awoke to find women trying to scrub what they thought was oil from his body. Based on the racism he had encountered through his life, Phillips had no reason to expect the kindness that St. Lawrence showered upon him.

Phlllps’s story has been embraced by Bill Crosby and will be the subject of a soon-to-be-produced play by Robert Chafe and Artistic Fraud.

On Thursday, the Lanier Phillips story was told - very well, and with excellent media support - on The Washington Post website. We thought you might like to have a look.
