Psst ... wanna buy a parking garage?

nl-parking-garage-ad-2011.jpg

The Atlantic Place parking garage in downtown St. John’s has been called many things since it was built more than 30 years ago; “architectural gem” would not be among them.

It is. nonetheless, a key point of the cityscape in downtown St. John’s.

And, to judge from this advertisement, it’s for sale.

It’s a pretty terse ad; wouldn’t it have been more interesting if it, say, used some of the language found in real estate ads for much smaller properties? (You know, “rusty rustic charm,” “split-seconds from downtown,” “panoramic views of the harbour” …)

Joking and such aside, the garage is a pretty key part of downtown, particularly as there’s often a crunch to find parking.

The complex is valued at $18 million, which CBRE describes as being “priced well below replacement cost.” With 720 spaces over eight storeys, that works out to a value of $25,000 a spot. There’s food for thought about the value of parking in downtown St. John’s!

St. John's, as seen by Republic of Doyle

It’s no wonder that members of St. John’s city council recently paid tribute to the people behind Republic of Doyle. The show, which will soon clew up its second season on CBC Television (and will, soon enough, start work on shooting season three), makes St. John’s look incredibly good, week after week.

This fan-made video was posted to YouTube yesterday, to the accompaniment of the title track from the Fables’ album St. John’s.

Lovely.

Meanwhile, here are some things you may like to know. You can follow Republic of Doyle on Twitter right here. Star and driving force Allan Hawco tweets from here. Mark O’Brien, who plays Des, just joined Twitter and is figuring it out here. You can find Krystin Pellerin, who plays the hardest working cop in Sin Jawnz, right here.

Recycling: Keep it blue, but especially keep it plastic

nl-recycling-curb-20101018.jpg

It may sound counter-intuitive, but bio-degradable bags are being discouraged from the new curbside recycling program in St. John’s.

Why? Well, those bags don’t end their lives when their contents are taken and sorted at the new facility at Robin Hood Bay. They actually get tumbled together and are recycled themselves, and the biodegradable bags wind up contaminating - yes, that’s the word that’s used - the lot. Who knew?

Moreover, it turns out that the blue bags are the ones the city wants to see and handle.

Ted Blades of On The Go got the skinny from Ken Kelly. Listen to the interview here.

The lunch box and the security alarm

tp-stjohns-airport-20080108.jpg

A left-behind lunchbox caused a bit of a security commotion at St. John’s International Airport this morning.

Emergency vehicles were seen responding to a hangar at the airport, after someone evidently reported a suspicious package.

The package turned out to be … a lunch box.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary told us that emergency personnel were following protocol, and ensured that everything was secure.

No word on how long that lunch box had been there, and whether was inside was itself a threat to human safety!

A foggy day on Signal Hill

There’s no breaking news in this post.

No one got hurt, no one did anything to someone else, and there are no politicians to be seen.

Just some shots from today of fog wafting by Signal Hill. It caught our eye; we used the video for a weather shot on Here & Now tonight. We thought you’d like to take a look, too.

St. John's flag to fly over Mount Pearl ...

nl-okeefe-dennis-20080609b.jpg

… but only for a week.

Relax, Mount Pearl folk, you’re not about to swallowed up by the amalgamation-hungry bigger city to the east. Instead, your mayor came out on the wrong side of a bet.

St. John’s Mayor Dennis O’Keefe couldn’t help but boast at Monday evening’s meeting that he won a small bet over a senior men’s baseball game with Randy Simms, the mayor of neighbouring Mount Pearl.

St. John’s was playing Mount Pearl in that match, and you can guess which politician bet on which team.

The winner of the bet got the privilege of having his city’s flag fly outside the neighbouring city hall.

As well, O’Keefe revealed, Simms will have to wear a St. John’s baseball jersey to his next council meeting.

Friendly chatter aside, we in the newsroom won’t be surprised if the A-word is revived again, or conflicts of opinion about important issues (remember that crosstown extension?) become obvious in the weeks and months ahead.

Call-centre turnaround?

We here in the newsroom had been under the impression that there’s been a sag in the call-centre industry. We’ve heard of layoffs, fewer openings, and a decline in contracts from the U.S., where the economy has been in brutal shape for the last couple of years.

A news release this afternoon caught our eye. Convergys is holding a job fair on Tuesday afternoon to fill 120 jobs at a contact centre on Torbay Road in St. John’s. Convergys is looking ” for potential employees who will provide customer service, billing and technical support for a client in the entertainment industry.”

If call centres are an indication of the state of the broader national if not international economy, a hiring boom may be significant.

Is our hunch right? Let us know.

From crime to tea biscuits

Our morning smile today comes from a theatrical promotional poster that always makes me grin.

Click on the Corner Boys site for the exact details, as well as information about their other summer production, Mutiny.

A quiet race in St. John's harbour

My family and I were downtown Saturday when we noticed something you don’t see that often in the harbour: a sailboat. And then another, and another after that…

There turned out to be eight sailboats in all, competing in the Port Authority Harbour Race. They lapped the harbour for more than an hour, while hundreds of people (us included) looked on.

Joe Dawson was also there, captured some scenes and posted them to YouTube.

Tely 10

Colin Fewer - a repeat winner of the Tely 10 road race in St. John’s - broke from the ranks to win the 10-mile competition this morning. Kate Vaughan had the fastest time among female competitors. Congrats to all who entered, and finished!

The future of the Bannerman bandstand

Wallace-Ryan-Bannerman-Park.jpg

If you have spent any time at Bannerman Park in St. John’s, you likely have seen the old bandstand. St. John’s cartoonist Wallace Ryan (above) is worried that plans for the park will see the bandstand replaced with something unacceptable. Watch the clip below to see Wallace’s interview with Here & Now’s David Cochrane.

A very fast drive along Topsail Road

This video was posted to YouTube this week, with a speeded-up recording of the drive from Upper Gullies through the rest of Conception Bay South, into Paradise and Mount Pearl and finally into the heart of St. John’s (to Churchill Square, if you hang in there).

Perhaps there’s an expat who might like to see how the old road has changed.

You can see more videos posted by The Newfoundland Explorer right here.
