Sidney Crosby gets a home run at batting practice ... left-handed

A little while ago on the St. John’s Morning Show, John Hancock of the national sports desk was speaking with Jeff Gilhooly about Sidney Crosby, who hit a home run while at batting practice … and in the left-handed cage, no less.

John mentioned that the video was on YouTube. We thought you might like to see it.

St. John's flag to fly over Mount Pearl ...

… but only for a week.

Relax, Mount Pearl folk, you’re not about to swallowed up by the amalgamation-hungry bigger city to the east. Instead, your mayor came out on the wrong side of a bet.

St. John’s Mayor Dennis O’Keefe couldn’t help but boast at Monday evening’s meeting that he won a small bet over a senior men’s baseball game with Randy Simms, the mayor of neighbouring Mount Pearl.

St. John’s was playing Mount Pearl in that match, and you can guess which politician bet on which team.

The winner of the bet got the privilege of having his city’s flag fly outside the neighbouring city hall.

As well, O’Keefe revealed, Simms will have to wear a St. John’s baseball jersey to his next council meeting.

Friendly chatter aside, we in the newsroom won’t be surprised if the A-word is revived again, or conflicts of opinion about important issues (remember that crosstown extension?) become obvious in the weeks and months ahead.

Dan Cleary, on the mend

Dan Cleary, the pride and joy of many Newfoundland and Labrador hockey fans, has had some tough knocks lately, and has had enough time in the operating room to prove it. Fans will be glad to know that Cleary is coming along well after knee surgery, is back into training, and will be back in Newfoundland soon for a kids’ hockey camp.

Soccer tricks

Andrew Brown, who’s been working in our newsroom and did yeoman service as a blogger with CBC Sports’ World Cup coverage, shot this video on Saturday during Soccer Day in Canada celebrations at King George V park near downtown St. John’s.

As Andrew put it in his own post: “19-year-old Vince Hearn, in my opinion, stole the show with some of the most impressive soccer ball tricks I’ve ever seen.”
