St. John's, as seen by Republic of Doyle

It’s no wonder that members of St. John’s city council recently paid tribute to the people behind Republic of Doyle. The show, which will soon clew up its second season on CBC Television (and will, soon enough, start work on shooting season three), makes St. John’s look incredibly good, week after week.

This fan-made video was posted to YouTube yesterday, to the accompaniment of the title track from the Fables’ album St. John’s.

Lovely.

Meanwhile, here are some things you may like to know. You can follow Republic of Doyle on Twitter right here. Star and driving force Allan Hawco tweets from here. Mark O’Brien, who plays Des, just joined Twitter and is figuring it out here. You can find Krystin Pellerin, who plays the hardest working cop in Sin Jawnz, right here.

Republic of Doyle gets a third season

Jake, Malachy & Rose, Des & Tinny … the hardest-working private investigators in St. John’s will be back on the job in 2012.

Republic of Doyle got the nod today for a third season. This is big news for fans, of course, but it’s also an important story in the local production community, which works flat-out between June and December when the show is shooting around St. John’s multi-coloured backgrounds. (And that’s not counting how hard Allan Hawco and the pre-production and post-production teams work before and after the cameras are rolling.)

Meanwhile, CBC announced that two other shows with a strong local flavour will also be returning next season. Both 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report will be back.

Danny Williams and Mark Critch consult 'Codfather' Gordon Pinsent

Danny Williams has had a long-running relationship with 22 Minutes, either being the butt of a joke or more likely being in on the joke himself.

On Tuesday night, the retiring Williams bowed out with a star-studded sketch with regular foil Mark Critch that also featured Gordon Pinsent (who had a recent star turn in a sketch about Justin Bieber’s memoir) … and Allan Hawco and Sean McGinley in Republic of Doyle mode.

If you haven’t seen it already, we’ll bet you’ll want to take a look. In fact, chances are excellent you’ll watch it again.

Just in time for Christmas!

A message from Allan Hawco and the folks over at Republic of Doyle:

Oh yeah! Jake Doyle has a date with the red carpet

Here are some details from CBC Arts’ coverage of the nominations:

Allan Hawco, star of the Republic of Doyle as well as creator and producer, said he was delighted to see the show get five nominations and “very proud” to see cast members honoured for their performances.

“I’m not surprised, especially in the case of Rachel [Wilson] and Lynda [Boyd] - they are such great talent,” he said. “They bring such truth and honesty to the work.”

Wilson is nominated for best supporting actress in a drama and Boyd for best lead actress in a drama. Hawco also has a nomination.

“People in St. John’s have been very supportive,” he said. “All I’ve been trying to do is tell stories as best I can and try to make it as entertaining and fun to watch as possible.”*

Some had been hoping that Gordon Pinsent would get a nomination for the rum-running rogue he played earlier this year, but it was not to be.

The Rick Mercer Report, meanwhile, picked up four nominations, including best comedy, best individual performance, best direction and best photography.

A full list of nominations can be seen here.

The Gemini Awards will be presented in Toronto in November.

Mr. Pinsent is called to the (Doyle) set

Earlier this year, Gordon Pinsent made a guest appearance on an episode of Republic of Doyle called Hit and Rum. If you saw it, you’ll know that Pinsent played a salty rogue named Maurice Becker, who had set himself up as a bootlegger in St-Pierre-Miquelon.

When we last saw Becker, he was waking up in a compromised situation outdoors in St. John’s, with the Constabulary trotting towards him.

It may not necessarily be the last for the character, and is definitely not the last we’ll see of Pinsent on the show.

Bob Symonds caught this snap on the set of the CBC hit series, which started shooting its second season last week in and around St. John’s.

We’ll have to wait until next winter to see what Pinsent does with this performance.

Meanwhile, Pinsent is making the most of a hectic summer. He just celebrated his 80th birthday, and is marking by debuting his latest play Easy Down, Easy at the Grand Bank Theatre. The play is directed by Mary Walsh. We’ll have more about the play later today on the site.
