12 reasons to come to the CBC Open House

We’re throwing open the doors to our broadcasting centre in St. John’s, and you’re invited. On Saturday, from noon until 5 o’clock, we’ll be welcoming audiences for a unique look inside where all of our programming originates.

And, it should be noted, it’s all free.

Here are 10 good reasons to come:

  1. Predict the weather with our green screen. Do you have a budding Ryan Snoddon in the house? Bring them along … and bring your camera to get the full “effect.” (A cape may not be a bad idea, as we may throw on some aerial footage.

  2. Win a prize. We’re giving away an iPod to the winner of a quiz that is as much of a trivia test as it is a scavenger hunt.

  3. Meet the names behind the microphones. Most of our hosts will be here during the afternoon to meet you, answer questions and show you around. Jeff Gilhooly, Ramona Dearing, Ted Blades, John Furlong, Angela Antle, Francesca Swann, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Pauline Thornhill, Jane Adey and Debbie Cooper will be on hand.

  4. Have a Doyle moment. Members of the Republic of Doyle cast will be here to meet you. Meet Krystin Pellerin, Marthe Bernard, Lynda Boyd and Mark O’Brien … although you may also know them as Const. Bennett, Tinny, Rose and Des.

  5. Ryan Snoddon will answer any weather question you have. Well, he’ll try.

  6. Take a guided tour of the building. You’ll be greeted in the foyer by a reporter or host, and then we’ll show you the newsroom, where our news and current affairs team work for you, seven days a week. Then, down to Studio 2, which is the home of Here & Now, Early Edition and Late Night. Then, out to our lawn, where a range of exciting things await … like …

  7. Get your hands dirty. Make a tile from clay, with the help of folks from the clay studio at the Newfoundland and Labrador Craft Council. Audience-made pieces will be used to create a unique display at our CBC building - your slice of an artistic legacy!

  8. Have a laugh and a boatload of fun. We have face-painting, balloon-twisting, a magic show at 3:30 p.m., a show by the East Rock Crew at 3:30 and (sing it loud!) a karaoke contest at 4:30 p.m.

  9. Celebrate Culture Days. Our tents will be filled with quite the array of attractions, such as a Sharing The Cultures interactive display, featuring children’s games from around the world. You can see trailers of films provided by the Nickel Film Festival and the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. Want to make a dreamcatcher? The folks from the Native Friendship Centre will show you how.

  10. Tap your feet, enjoy some tunes. The Dardanelles, featuring our own Tom Power (host of Deep Roots), will play four 30-minute sets in the entertainment tent. Shows start at 1 o’clock and then each hour, on the hour. As well, Sandy Morris - the guitar genius behind Land & Sea’s beloved theme - will be in Studio 2 to meet you.

  11. Make some noise. For us, that is. We’re going to be recording sound pieces through the day, and we’d like your help. We’re looking for what we call “IDs” or “idents” that we intend to play on our radio shows. Who knows? You

  12. And this is important … Do some good. The open house is free, but we’re asking you to bring a non-perishable item for the Community Food Sharing Association.
