Mark Critch gets the translated goods from Gilles Duceppe

As we understand it, 22 Minutes had wanted its sketch with Gilles Duceppe to resemble a bit from September with Danny Williams in which the Newfoundland and Labrador premier took French lessons.

No English lessons here, but Mark Critch’s translator-assisted conversation with Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe is a chuckle.

The segment appeared last week. You can watch the full episode here:

Mad Hatter and tea parties

Mad Hatter tea party sign.jpg

Saturday’s Restore the Sanity And/or Fear rally in Washington attracted more humour than usual, which should have been expected given the proponents were comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The above is just one of the signs depicted in this collection (a heads-up: some are not family fare).

Stars Wars, as told in Facebook status comments

Star Wars as told in Facebook statuses.jpg

Here’s a chuckle for anyone who’s seen Star Wars - you know, the original film, now known to kids as A New Hope - and has been on Facebook … and (let’s be upfront) can handle some adult language. It’s a laugh.

Christopher Walken, as you've never seen him before

Eddie Izzard is one of the funniest comedians anywhere, whether or not they’re wearing a sparkling evening gown. This morning’s funny features Izzard’s dead-on impression of actor Christopher Walken, under the guise of Walken attempting to do Shakespeare.

By the way, if you’re at work, or around children, you may well want to use earplugs.

Dad life

To all the dads with dozens of dollars … this is for you.

Pokemon and Miley Cyrus

Pokemon celebrity Lickitung Miley Cyrus.jpg

The kids will likely know more about Pokemon … and Miley Cyrus, for that matter. All the same, you might get a chuckle of these comparisons of Pokemon characters and some famous faces from pop culture.

Gordon Pinsent reads from the memoir of Justin Bieber

The folks at 22 Minutes asked Gordon Pinsent to tackle an interesting assignment: the memoir of another noted Canadian, 16-year-old pop star Justin Bieber.

In case you missed it, here’s the sketch:

Kitty meets ball

You would think that the internet would have reached its limit for cute cat photos.

And you’d be wrong.

Ghostbusters goes to the library

The New York Public Library, with those massive lion statues in front, is one of the best places anywhere to read a book.

And, evidently, see a ghost … at least according this production from Improv Everywhere. With Halloween in the wind, we thought you’d like to see it.

Away for a week

Yours truly is out of the office - and will actually be offline - for the coming week.

We’ll be back to normal on Monday, Oct. 18.

Just in time for Halloween

Paparazzi Halloween costume.jpg

Looking for an idea for Halloween? Here’s a costume that’s over the top: this fellow went as The Paparazzi, and everything you see by the fellow went with him as he travelled. (Wide doors were no doubt appreciated.) You can see more unusual, handmade costumes here.

Take that, Fred Flintstone

Winter is, hopefully, a good distance from us, but this picture should give you a chuckle. Found here.

Eating local, with Cyril and Mavis

Two students at the College of the North Atlantic used their studies in film and video production to make a point about food, particularly where it comes from.

Connie LaSaga of Flat Bay and Ryan Smith of Stephenville won a competition held by Co-op grocery stores in Atlantic Canada.

Good on them. Here’s their winning video, titled Cyril & Mavis Eat Atlantic.

Stop, look and listen

stop-dancing-sign.jpg

It’s been a remarkably unfunny week, but things are kind of getting back to normal … and it’s time for a morning smile once again.

The pic above comes from this collection of shots that show what tinkering with a stop sign can do.

'No, it's pronounced ... Eye-gor'

With Igor sweeping into Newfoundland, a bit of humour never goes astray. Below, a selection of clips from the Mel Brooks classic Young Frankenstein, with Marty Feldman as Igor.

Why, Daddy?: A conversation in chemistry

shower soap dish.jpg

When young kids won’t stop asking ‘Why’ … it’s a situation every parent knows. But what happens when a little girl’s endless curiosity involves the shower her Dad just had, and Dad happens to be a chemist?

Something just like this. (You don’t have to be a chemist, but it would probably help.)

A bar where you're welcome to sit around and wait

The Progress Bar - which, as seen above - doesn’t actually exist, but it should … as anyone who’s tapped their fingers waiting for something to load will attest. More on the faux bar here.

The Hemhinhem Show

Jonny Harris.jpg

So, the other night Jonny Harris - the writer, actor and one quarter of the wish-they’d-get-together-again Dance Party of Newfoundland - polled his friends on Facebook for some suggestions.

Here’s the question:

Jonny Harris bay rap name.jpg

Not the most politically correct kind of wording, but Jonny’s friends responded with some hilarious proposals. Folks in our newsroom really liked ideas like The Notorious U.I.C. and Lil Touton.

But a great laugh came from one of our own. Here’s David Cochrane’s suggestion, and an immediate reaction from Mark Critch:

A back-to-school cartoon

With most students heading back to school this morning, here’s a great cartoon about a little student named Oxygen and how he makes his way to Element-ary school.

The many, many laughs of Ricky Gervais

Britain’s Ricky Gervais has made millions of people laugh over the years, from The Office onward. Gervais also obviously likes a good, full belly laugh himself, if the series of clips above reveals anything.

Solving a Rubik's Cube ... while in freefall

In the early ’80s, I patted myself when I was able to solve a Rubik’s Cube all by myself … and looked on with envy as friends whipped through it in mere seconds.

The Rubik’s Cube is still around, including this freshly produced video of a puzzle-solver who has just jumped out of an airplane. Talk about pressure!

Meanwhile, I got a belly laugh out of this comment on the YouTube page where the video was posted:

> ah, its a fake.. he was sitting on the ground with a solved cube, then he jumped up into the air and just scrambled it, then they played the video in reverse…

A local parody of that Facebook movie

You may or may not by now have seen the trailer for The Social Network, a.k.a., “the Facebook movie.”

Either way, you really should see the parody that local blogger Greg Pike put together. It’s hilarious.

To really appreciate the parody, you should have a look at the original. Here’s the trailer for The Social Network, coming to a theatre near a shopping experience near you in October.

Meanwhile, have a look at a local viral sensation that Pike produced before. In 2008, Pike and his friends made a low-rent but spot-on take on Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Check it out here, albeit in two parts.

The tourist lane

Your daily smile comes from Improv Everywhere, who are willing to do plenty of things … like convince New Yorkers and tourists alike that they belong in different pedestrian lines.

Slap Shot gets the Inception treatment

There’s been a lot of chatter about Inception, the head-spinning Leonado Di Caprio movie about dreams, reality and a whole lot of other things that may or may not exist. It certainly has a style of its own … and what would happen if other movies got that treatment?

Like, say … Slap Shot, the flat-out broad 1977 hockey comedy with Paul Newman?

Batman and Robin mix it up over the Lower Churchill

Batman Robin Lower Churchill What Odds.jpg

The Lower Churchill megaproject excites some strong emotions, particularly on how best to develop it. Why, then, couldn’t Robin and Batman have a racket, too?

This was created by the Batman and Robin Comic Generator, which allows you to handcraft any conversation you’d like. I created a separate one on my own blog in February, when the Fortis proposal for downtown St. John’s was on the go.

The original trolls ... were in the Muppet theatre

Statler and Waldorf Demotivational Posters.jpg

Trolls, if you’re not aware, are the nasty people who congregate in message boards, comments sections, chatrooms, etc., just waiting for an opportunity to spit some bile. (Actually, there’s usually not a lot of waiting.)

Demotivational Posters gives Statler and Waldorf the nod of influence they so richly deserve.

Nana Mouskouri gets the girl power treatment

Darth Vader and Yoda tell you exactly where to go

Star Wars header Tom Tom.jpg

Several weeks ago, I read about how the GPS provider Tom Tom was adding a new celebrity voice to its arsenal: Yoda. The metre-high Jedi master is the latest voice from the Star Wars universe to come attached to a GPS program. A few clicks, and I learned that Darth Vader has already been on the market.

Even better, Tom Tom had a hilarious video to promote the supposed recording sessions.

More than two million people have watched that video, so it’s no surprise that Tom Tom got Yoda before a camera, too. (Too bad the camera couldn’t see him!)

Crime ... class struggle ... tea biscuits

I got a chuckle when I saw a different poster for this production last year, promoting The Garden Party, a historically themed production that has returned this summer to Commissariat House. I’m glad that Mary Walsh & co. have kept the billing.

The show continues until Aug. 22. You can find out more about it, as well as another show, Mutiny, at the CornerBoys website.

A park cautionary tale, a la Happy Days

Russell Bowers Daybreak host 190.jpg

Our daily smile comes this morning from our very own building … to be precise, a little bit of banter heard Tuesday morning on the St. John’s Morning Show.

The guy above? That’s Russell Bowers, the Bell Island boy who’s back in town hosting the show while Jeff Gilhooly is getting some R&R. Russell’s ordinary gig is hosting Daybreak in Alberta every weekend. If you’ve heard the show, you know Russell’s got A) a way of telling a story and B) a sense of humour.

So, yesterday, a day in which we had cautionary stories about wildlife and humans interacting, Russell noted while chatting with newscaster Maggie Gillis that there have been problems with deer on Haida Gwai, which used to be known as the Queen Charlotte Islands.

“Tourists get out of their cars and walk up to the Bambis and feed them,” Russell told Maggie. Among the consequences is that “Mama Bambi,” as he put it, will abandon its young if it has come into human contact.

It seems that on the Queen Charlotte Islands, it’s a bit like Happy Days,” Russell said.

Right at this point, he made a strategic pause.

“Don’t touch the fawns,” he concluded.

As The Fonz would say, Ayyyyyyy. Or, groannnnn

And, as they say at the comedy clubs, he’s here all week.

Slap-chop (minority parliament edition)

Last week, when a public opinion poll showed that the federal Conservatives’ lead had pretty much evaporated, the words “minority Parliament” seemed to be looming again.

Which brought to mind this sketch from the Rick Mercer Report:

The ice cream vendor who can really dish it out

A tourist in Istanbul gets more than just the ice cream he ordered, as the vendor messes around with the order. Good humour man, indeed!
