Overheard in the legislature
Kelvin Parsons was speaking in the house of assembly earlier today on a bill concerning the justice system. His interest, though, was more about the ongoing fuss about psychiatric services at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in St. John’s.
What Parsons had to say caught our ear as, well, an unfortunate choice of words.
Here’s what Parsons said after noting that Justice Minister Felix Collins touched off a firestorm after he rejected, out of hand, a report by citizens’ representative Barry Fleming.
“Thankfully the people of this province watch the media, Mr. Speaker.
The people of this province - the open lines went crazy, the media went crazy, the mental health groups in this province went crazy.”
Here in the newsroom, a few of us expect these were thoughts that Parsons would probably want to reconsider.
