Aly O'Brien, as told to the Late Show with Gordon Pinsent

Aly O’Brien was a local legend in St. John’s, one of a group of brothers who maintained a historic family farm in the city, and kept alive traditions that had faded away elsewhere.

The brighter side of Twillingate
Twillingate has had a pretty tough time this month, in the wake of a tragic boating accident that killed four people, including two young brothers.
Anyone who’s been there knows Twillingate is a special place. Here are two places that underscore that.
First, a link to a documentary Heather Barrett did for the Sunday Edition called My Private Twillingate, about Dr. Mohamed Iqbal Ravalia, an East Indian Muslim from Zimbabwe who nonetheless found a welcoming home on Newfoundland’s northeast coast.
Second, here’s a Land & Sea episode about the Split Peas, the musical ladies who have brought out the best in Twillingate. Relax, and enjoy.

The Late Show with Gordon Pinsent is back

If you’re like me, you could listen to Gordon Pinsent read classified ads and still be intrigued. It’s a delight to Pinsent anchoring The Late Show again this summer, with documentaries on the lives of Canadians who had extraordinary lives, but are probably not nationally famous.
The show is produced by Mary Lynk from Halifax. (Some listeners of the St. John’s Morning Show may remember Mary from her time here.)
Among the upcoming episodes is a documentary by Heather Barrett about Aly O’Brien, who maintained a farm at Mount Scio with his brothers late into his remarkable life. That documentary will air July 29 and Aug.1; we’ll make sure to tell you about it in advance.
In the meantime, you can hear the show each Thursday at 10 a.m. NT during the summer months, with a replay on Sunday at 8 p.m. NT.
The Late Show is also available as a podcast you can download; click on this link to look for the podcast options.
