Mike Downey, RIP
We’ve lost one of our own at the CBC.
Mike Downey, whose voice will be well known to many listeners in the province, particularly in central Newfoundland, died Monday. He was 61.
Mike grew up in Corner Brook, and started his broadcasting career at CJON-TV in the early 1970s, when he was a university student in St. John’s.
He dabbled in politics in his early years, working as an executive assistant to Ed Roberts, while Roberts led the provincial Liberal party in the mid-1970s.
Downey went on to work for CBC Radio in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and in Gander, and co-hosted the Central Morning Show.
Downey was most recently living in Holyrood.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Dunphy’s Funeral Home.
