JUNE-UARY
June 23, 2011 6:25 PM
Hey Folks,
After a fantastic few weeks off... (more on that below) it's great to be
back here in the Weather Centre!
Unfortunately, I see that the weather has been less than steeler since I
left. The good news, it can only get better!!???!!
WHAT A J-U-N-E-UARY!
We'll break down the numbers at the end of the month... however a quick
glance at the past 3 weeks... it's pretty obvious we've been battling with Old Man Spring.
In St. John's & East - After hitting 22 degrees back on May 27th...
we've yet to hit 20 in the month of June. In fact, for 11 of 22 days this month... we've had High's in the SINGLE DIGITS!!! Brrrr. The average daily High for June
has been just 11.3! Normal is 16.
One last depressing stat for the East... for 21 of 23 days this month... at least a trace of Rain has been reported in St. John's.
Gander & Central sections have already had 122 mm of Rain... normal is
80 mm for the month of June.
Corner Brook & the West Coast didn't have a bad start to the month...
but for the last week you haven't had a temperature warmer than 12 degrees.
Happy Valley-Goose Bay- You folks haven't been terrible temperature wise...
but 17 of 22 days you've seen at least a trace of Rain or more.
Lab City hasn't been too bad temperatures wise either... but over 100 mm of
Rain on the ground already. Your normal is 80 mm.
WHY OH WHY?
Has it been soooo terrible. Blame the good old Negative NAO (North Atlantic
Oscillation). You can see the chart below how the blue columns are all well
below the zero line... indicating a strong Negative NAO.
What a Negative NAO means... is that Pressures have been HIGHER than normal
over Greenland and Iceland... so when Low's come into Newfoundland... they can't
continue to track Northeastward. So as a result, they sit and spin. Earlier in the month that
meant an Easterly flow... when that Low was parked to the South. In the last week,
that's meant a Northerly flow with a Low parked overhead and just to the East.
WHAT'S THE FORECAST?
It appears, the NAO is going back at least Neutral or maybe even Positive over the next week or
so. That means Low's that come in... should be able to exit fairly quickly.
In the short term, it doesn't appear that this changing pattern do much for our lack of
Sunshine... with what appears to be an active track and Low's coming in from the
Southwest next week. However, it should give us an opportunity to warm up a
bit... and maybe even squeek in some Sunshine, between those Low's.
WEDDING!!!
Finally I'd like to report that thankfully, the Weather was amazing last
weekend back on Snoddon Farms in Ontario. My lovely, longtime girlfriend, Annie and I
tied the knot under Sunny skies and 27 degrees. We had an amazing day with
friends and family... and even though we returned to 8 degrees and R-D-F... we
are happy to be back in Newfoundland : )
