HOW COLD IS TOO COLD IN LAB WEST?

Hey Folks,

This was passed along to me, from a gentleman who came into the CBC Open House back in September. And on a day like today, I just had to share it with you...

It's a School release from Menihek Integrated High School, from back in December of 1980... (click to zoom in)

You folks in Western Labrador must have been a pretty tough bunch up there in 1980.... I mean -83!!!  Really!?!?

As Rodney Barney from the Gander Weather Office pointed out. Those Wind Chill factors would have been based on the old Wind Chill Index, which has since been changed.

Based on the Old Scale for a -68 (New Scale would be about -55)
Actual temperature of -30 & Winds of 90 km/h
Actual temperature of -40 & Winds of 30 km/h

Based on the Old Scale... for -83  (New Scale would be about -70)
Actual temperature of -40 & Winds of 90 km/h.
Actual temperature of -50 % Winds of 30 km/h

I'm happy to report that the schools have "softened" somewhat in the last 30 years. Today with a Wind Chill between -40 and -45... school for Kindergarten to Grade 7, remained closed for the day!!!
