Kevin's Challenge Synopsis:
I decided to throw a spin on the typical political event, the community BBQ, by having it act as a fundraiser to create a scholarship for the Waterloo Region District School Board. The Scholarship – the Royal TIE Scholarship – will be given to students from low-income backgrounds with plans to attend a post-secondary institution in Canada, who have demonstrated interest in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship (TIE). The focus on technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, coupled with post-secondary education, all align with pillars of my vision for Canada in this contest. Finally, in order to align with my vision for private-public partnerships, I offered to match all donations received from the community for the event.
The BBQ was a success beyond my expectations, raising $390.25 from the community, which matched by my funding created a total raised of almost $800. After consulting with the Waterloo Region District School Board, the endowment will be created to award the TIE Scholarship over four years, in the amounts of $200 for the first two years, and $225 for the latter two. The higher amount of the scholarship results from the unawarded portion for the latter years being invested in a no-risk certificate.
