Zimbabwe: A Very Controversial Election

In this report we look at the controversy and conflict surrounding what has been referred to as the ÒcloudedÓ election in Zimbabwe. We examine the allegations that Robert Mugabe - Zimbabwe's first and only prime minister since it declared independence from Britain in 1980 - concentrated his hold on power by rewriting the constitution and rigging the election. The tragic civil unrest, the economic ruin of a nation that initially showed promise of prosperity, and the response of other Commonwealth member countries are key aspects of the story.
