Jim Flaherty, Canada's former finance minister, has died. He was 64.

flaherty_120.jpgFlaherty was one of Canada's longest serving finance ministers and the only finance minister to serve under Prime Minister Stephen Harper until he stepped down last month, citing a plan to return eventually to the private sector.

Flaherty's career in politics spans nearly 20 years, beginning in the halls of the Ontario legislature.

He was elected as a federal MP for Whitby-Oshawa and assumed the position of federal finance minister in 2006.
