Frozen Disney princess reimagined by artists

Storified by CBC News Community· Tue, Jul 02 2013 16:08:43

Tumblr artists are reimagining what Disney's 12th princess from its upcoming movie Frozen may have looked like had the company decided against making Anna white, like most of its other 11 female protagonists.

The movie is loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Snow Queen.

It's the second Disney adaptation of an Andersen fairy tale. Andersen also wrote The Little Mermaid.
As Disney began releasing more images from the upcoming flick, many noted that animators had done a beautiful job creating the two main female protagonists, Elsa and Anna.

However, many couldn't help but notice that Disney may have missed an opportunity to create a non-White princess.

Liking the looks of the female characters for Disney's FROZEN (even tho, yeah, so white). Plz no girl-on-girl hate.
Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed that Princess Anna looks almost like a carbon-copy of Rapunzel. This project could've had so much potential. They COULD'VE re-imagined it as an Inuit tale, that would've been fantastic! But from what I hear, the adaptation Disney's doing doesn't even remotely resemble the HCA story, so Disney can eff off anyway.Colleen Deitrich

Of Disney's 11 princesses, only four are not white: Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine and - most recently - Tiana from  The Princess and the Frog.

The other seven princesses, or eight including Anna, are white.

To illustrate their point, amateur animators took matters into their own hands and started redrawing Elsa, Anna and other characters from Frozen. They posted them to a Tumblr blog dedicated to the project called, This could have been Frozen.

It's not the first time Disney has faced controversy over its animation choices.

Earlier this year, Disney faced a barrage of criticism for attempting to makeover Merida from Brave.
However, Disney backtracked on the makeover - minus some mass produced merchandise featuring the reimagined Merida - following an outpouring of anger.
What do you think of Disney's newest princess?
