Will Smith and his son Jaden may be making headlines with their upcoming father-son adventure movie After Earth - but dad's real-world survival tips have garnered some attention, too.

"Probably the best advice he's ever given me is, 'Don't have a girlfriend'," 14-year-old Jaden said during the press tour for their film.

"At this point, I just want him to establish his dreams, establish his desires. Find out who he is. And blending with another person is very difficult, and a lot of times you can lose yourself in that process," explained Smith.

"So my encouragement to him is to be honest with anybody that he interacts with. Don't make commitments that a 14-year-old can't live up to."

It's not the first time the U.S. actor and singer has broadcast his fatherly advice about love.

In a song penned for his first-born son, Trey, Smith warns his son that "one day some girl's gonna break your heart."

He goes on to advise his son not to take his pain out on the next girl, adding: "Throughout life people will make you mad. Disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, Cause hate in your heart will consume you too."

Although the actor's fame amplified his more recent advice to Jaden, the conversation about when to start dating is one to which people many can relate.

Were you advised not to date, or forbidden from dating, before a certain age? When do you think teens should start dating, and to what extent?
