For many Canadians, September is a time of transition: from shorts to pants, from swimsuits to backpacks, from days leisure to days of hectic mornings and homework-filled nights.

It's also a month that falls straight between the winter and summer solstices.

September is also the most moderate month in many places, striking the perfect balance between hot and cold, dark and light.

In the spirit of that sense of balance, we decided to make this month's photo contest theme all about Black and White photography.

Monochromatic photos may seem simple enough to shoot, but a professional photographer will tell you that they require close attention to detail, composition, lighting, perspective and context.

Contrast is often key. How well can you balance dark and light within a photo?

"Always think about the balance between the black and white and where it falls in the space" writes photography resource Photoble in its Tips for Shooting Black & White section. "Photographing in black and white is sometimes considered to be the purist form of photography because you rely much more heavily on composition and form than with color shots."

We've given you an outline for the format of this month's photo contest, but the subject is completely up to you.

Landscapes, portraits, macros, pets, nature, parties -- anything that fits within our rules and guidelines will work! Get creative to win our audience's attention.

We'll be posting your best shots each weekday for the rest of September. At the end of the month, we'll select five finalists and ask you to vote for your favourite!
