Should Hollywood ban alcohol product placement?

Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Health

Researchers looking at depictions of alcohol in film and their effect on youth drinking habits suggest that product placements for alcohol should be banned, as they are for tobacco products.

Should Hollywood ban depictions of alcohol brands, as they do with tobacco brands? (iStock)The research, published Monday in the British Medical Journal, showed that those aged 10 to 14 who watched a lot of movies featuring alcohol were twice as likely to drink as those who watched relatively few such films.

The study also found that teens who watched a lot of boozy films were significantly more likely to progress to binge drinking.

A survey of Hollywood films found that half of them - regardless of rating - included at least one appearance of an alcohol brand.

The researchers suggest that the film industry adopt restrictions on featuring brand names of alcohol products, as it does with tobacco products.
