Is Myspace primed for a comeback?

Categories: Business, Community

Myspace co-owner Justin Timberlake thinks his company is primed for a bright future. Do you? (Steve Marcus/Reuters)Myspace is more popular than Tumblr and Google Plus, according to a recent social media study by the digital market researcher ComScore.

Myspace had nearly 27.3 million unique U.S. visitors between October 2010 and 2011, ComScore said in the report, titled It's a Social World: Top 10 Need-to-Knows About Social Networking and Where It's Headed.

That placed it fourth behind Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. While Myspace was not one of the top five social media networks in Canada, it finished fifth or higher in 13 of the 41 countries listed in the report, including Norway, Denmark, South Africa, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Until 2011, Myspace was the fourth largest global network after Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live Profile, ComScore said. But LinkedIn overtook it in 2011, pushing it down to fifth spot.

But is Myspace primed for a comeback?

On Monday, singer Justin Timberlake touted the future of Myspace and its key service, Myspace TV, at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, Nev.

"We're ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience," said Timberlake, who partnered with Specific Media in June to purchase Myspace from News Corp. "Why text or email your friends to talk about your favourite programs after they've aired when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe?

"Historically, social is about what you have done, possible what you're doing right now at this moment," he said. "The future of Myspace is about what you're going to do, about who you're going to become."

Do you think Myspace is primed for a comeback? Why or why not? What does it have in its favour, compared to other social networks, or working against it? Share your thoughts in the field below.
