New figures suggest more and more employers use sites like LinkedIn to recruit new hires. (Paul Sakuma/Associated Press)

According to figures compiled by the job site CareerEnlightenment.com, more and more employers are using social media to recruit and screen potential new hires.

The site found that 89 per cent of U.S. companies will use social media for recruting in 2011. Most of those employers do this via the network LinkedIn or Facebook.

But social media recruiting can be a double-edged sword, as the numbers also suggested one of three employers rejected a candidate based on something found out about them online.

There are over 16 million Canadians on Facebook, making it easier for employers to find potential candidates ... and their embarrassing party photos.

Have you ever found a job or an employee using social media? Do you adjust your social media presence when applying for jobs?
